Together with three Global Partner organisations, the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association - ITA for the next three years will be focussing on the contribution of underground space use to two worldwide themes. These themes are: urbanisation as adopted by UN-HABITAT (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) and the theme of ‘Resilience of cities against natural disasters and the effects of climate change’ as adopted by UN-ISDR (United Nations - International Strategy for Disaster Reduction).

One of the aims is to come up with a policy document which is supported by city planners, city governments and city engineers who are internationally organised through ISOCARP, ICLEI and IFME. The ITA Global Perspective Programme ‘Underground Space in a Changing World’ will run along several tracks, the ITA Open Sessions in Helsinki, Bangkok and Geneva being one of these tracks. The other tracks will be announced during this Open Session in Helsinki, which also will be the official launch of the ITA Global Perspective Programme.

Within ITA the programme is managed by ITACUS, the ITA Committee on Underground Space.
